Personal project | 2020 – ongoing
Topic: Reverse engineering and 3D
printing of SodaStream machine levers,
designed for replacement and online sales.
This project started with a simple need: my father asked me to fix his SodaStream machine after the lever broke. I soon discovered that this failure was common across many models, and that the brand did not offer spare parts. The first prototype was made for personal use, but due to demand, I decided to start offering it online.
I began with a reverse engineering approach: identifying functional surfaces, pivot points, and the spring housing. Each replacement lever is designed to be fully compatible with the original machine’s components, while being stronger and more durable.
The goal was to deliver a strong and reliable part that’s quick to manufacture. I optimized the slicing parameters (orientation, infill, wall thickness) to ensure maximum strength while reducing print time and material usage. Several prototypes were tested and the final version is still in daily use today.
I now sell these levers on various online platforms. To track production and orders, I created a custom Excel spreadsheet that allows me to:
- Manage inventory of printed parts and shipping supplies (envelopes, stamps, tracking labels)
- Calculate production costs (materials, electricity, print time, shipping)
- Rank lever models by popularity per platform
I also found a low-cost shipping solution without needing a business license, while still offering basic tracking for customers. Upon request, I can customize the color based on my available filament stock.
This project was a great way to connect design with real-world impact. Creating a stronger replacement part, handling micro-logistics, and staying cost-effective taught me to balance technical design, manufacturing efficiency, and practical decision-making. It’s a solid example of an autonomous and useful project with direct application.
